My Music Stars #3

On the morning of Saturday, July 2, 1977 I got up and left my apartment to ride my bicycle to the Oakland Coliseum for Bill Graham's Day on the Green.  Halfway there the right pedal broke off (it's between six and seven miles).  Luckily I had toe clips on my pedals so I

continued to pedal one legged.  I got to the show and laid out my blanket on first base where Dick Allen was working that summer and Mark McGwire would be in the future.  The stage was set up in the center field bleachers and you could sit anywhere you wanted except for the infield grass or the dugouts.  The Outlaws opened the show, then Carlos Santana with Leon Patillo on lead vocals.  Then the act I really came for (seemingly most of the crowd) Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ronnie Van Zant was one of the most charismatic people I have ever seen.  You can see the performance from that day in the movie Freebird.  Watching the tape today, there is much symbolism that they probably couldn't use now.  I still enjoying listening to Freebird and especially the fifteen minute version.  When the big curtain rolls down to show the picture of the bird the crowd went wild.  I am instructing my family to give $100 to the first person to scream Freebird during my memorial service (far in the future).  After Skynyrd played came Peter Frampton and many people took the opportunity to leave.  This was right after Frampton comes alive came out and was in heavy rotation on the radio.  Frampton overused the voice box and many people were leaving during his set.
Some things I remember from this concert.  There was more alcohol and weed than you would imagine after everyone was searched for those things at the gate.   I remember running into two guys I went to high school in Eugene with at the concert and lastly, I only paid $11.50 for the concert.

Gubernatorial Return #6

Kay Ivey is the oldest governor in the United States.  She is seventy five years old, she originally was appointed Governor in 2017 when her predecessor resigned and was arrested in the midst of a sex scandal.   She was elected to a full term in 2018 and her term expires in 2023.  It took her 16 days to return the cards to me.

Padrographs #20, 21, 22 and 1181

Just one new (kind of) Padrograph this week.  

#20, Yonder Alonso, played in four hundred thirty nine games for the Padres between 2012-2015.  He was traded to the A's in 2016, he played for the White Sox and Rockies in 2019.

#21, Matty Alou, finished his fifteen year career with the Padres in forty eight games in 1974. He passed away in 2011 at the age of seventy two.

#22, Bryan Altman, drafted by the Padres in the forty first round in 2010.  He made it as high as AAA in 2012

#1181, Aurelio Rodriguez, split 1980 between San Diego and the Yankees.  He played in eighty nine games for the Padres.  I found a photo of him with the Padres and with a little help from Gavin made a 1980 card and then bought an signed card of him and made this. He passed away at the age of fifty two in 2000.

Frankenset Update 10.25.19

Milt Pappas, Larry Nance and Steve Blass came from Jon of A Penny Sleeve for Your Thoughts in trade for some signed 1969 Topps football cards in the trade stack a few weeks back.  The Governor cards are part of my custom Governors of the US set, I have 20 out of 50 signed.  Dave Green and Brian Hayward are from eBay cause I needed those numbers.

My Music Stars, #2

 Larry Norman is the artist I have seen the most times in concert.  Sometimes with a backing band, at least once with just a piano, once with just a guitar.  I saw him in Oakland, Portland and Salem.  His lyrics were often at odds with mainstream Christianity as he was something of a social justice warrior, before there was such a label.  I was able to take my sons to see him in concert one Christmas in Salem, shortly before he passed away.  My son had done a multi level stencil of Larry on a record and was able to give it to him at the concert.  Somewhere we also have an autographed copy of the record.  I own 3 LP's by him.

Gubernatorial Return #5, Governor J.B. Pritzker

Governor Pritzker had no prior political experience before being elected as Governor.  He was sworn in January of 2019.  His family owns the Hyatt Hotel chain. He is personally worth $3.4 billion and is the wealthiest US Governor.   It only took 10 days to get this return back.

Padrographs #1175 to #1180

I had sent six custom cards to a grapher in San Diego and he got them signed for me.  I realized that I already had a Ronald Bolanos card (#1143), but I like my custom card better than the logoless Panini card.  
#1180, Curt Blefary, I remember pulling cards of Curt in the late '60's with the Orioles.  I was surprised when I found out he had played 74 games for the Padres in 1972.  I picked up the cut auto and inserted it into a custom Padres card.
#1179, David Bednar, David pitched in 13 games for the Padres in 2019.
#1178, Garrett Richards, Garrett pitched in three games for the Padres this year, after recuperating from Tommy John surgery.  He is expected to be a mainstay in the rotation next year.
#1177, Gerardo Reyes, pitched in 27 games for the Padres this year.  
#1176, Nick Martini, was picked off the waiver wire from Oakland in late August and played in 26 games for the Padres in 2019.
#1175, Seth Mejias-Brean, was signed as a free agent and played in 14 games for the Padres in 2019.

• Graduated from High School in Eugene's Civic Stadium home of the Eugene Emeralds at the time. 
• Played volleyball for seven straight days (12 hr shifts) on the Eugene Mall
• Reported to US Navy Boot Camp (did all of the above between June 12 and June 24)
• Saw my first two Padres games in person, during boot camp.  Big Mac, Willie McCovey played first
• The Padres under Manager John McNamara went 71-91 for last place in the NL West.
• Padres played at Jack Murphy stadium.
• Reported to A School for further training at Great Lakes for the US Navy.
• Shaved my head for the first time, not a wise idea in November on the shores of Lake Michigan.
• Have signed cards from 37 of the 38 players the Padres used in 1975, just missing Don Hahn.

Frankenset Update 10.18.19

Bill Bergey I bought on eBay because I like old football cards.  Asa Hutchinson is the Governor of Arkansas and signed the front of the cards I sent him, with a nice silver pen.  The others were purchased for $1 apiece, from the same dealer that Gavin got his Kellog's cards from at the Mall 205 card show.  He used to have a couple of stores in Portland, now he is clearing his garage out so he has some great deals.

My Music Stars, #1

I was inspired by Gavin's 1991 Musicards .  I wondered who wasn't in that set that I thought should be.  So I took some inspiration from the design of the set.  Actually I guess I just changed the colors and called it mine.  So far I have 54 acts on my checklist and will add more as they come to mind.  So here we go.  The first song I remember by John was Jack and Diane, I went out and bought the LP.  I really liked all the songs on the LP and bought the next one and so on.  I think the only format of John's music I haven't owned is an 8-Track.  His music has gone from pop to thoughtful rock over the years.  My favorite album is Scarecrow, I especially like the song, Rain on the Scarecrow.  John's Grandma is featured on the song Grandmas Theme.  His newest album Other People's stuff came out last year.   I own  5  LP's by him

Trade Stack Week 8

The Stewart, Lemahieu and Flannery have been claimed.  This weeks addition to the trade stack is this Shannon Stewart Topps redemption card.  I thought they had not sent it, but when my son who lives across the river in Vancouver, WA was going through some old mail he found a package for me from Topps and this was inside.  It can be yours for anything.

Gubernatorial #4, Governor Gina Raimondo

Did you know that the state of  Rhode Island has actually has the longest name of any state.  The official name is Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations.  Governor Raimondo only took 16 days to return the cards and she also sent some other cool stuff.  She sent two books, one a cool coffee table book about the state house and the other comparing Rhode Island to each of the other states.  She also enclosed a nice big calling card.  All other governors will have to go a long way to beat this return.

Padrograph #1173 and #1174

 #1173, Ryan Whitman. Awhile back Jeremy at Topps cards that never were did at set of 1995 Padres replacement players.  I asked him if he could make me three sets of the fronts and I would make backs for the cards.  I found the addresses of some of the players and have sent out six so far and this is the first one I have received back.  Ryan also included a 1993 dual rookie card with the Marlins that he signed.  It only took eight days for the card to come back.  

#1174, Jack Cust.  Jack took nine months to return the cards, but hey they came back. 
Jack played in six games for the Padres in 2006.

Frankenset Update 10.11.19

It was a good week for Gubernatorial returns.  I got a couple more back also, but they were signed on the back.  With the addition of Garvey and Lopes I have all four members of the legendary Dodgers infield of the 1970's.  The only one of the remaining players I had heard of is Matt Lollis who who was in the Padres system.

This weeks addition to the trade stack is this lovely 1969 Topps Football card signed by Tom Woodeshick.  Tom played from 1963-1972, all but one with the Eagles, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1972.

Gubernatorial Return #3, A suspended Presidential Campaign return

Jay Inslee, Governor of the State of Washington took fifteen days to Olympia and back, it is 114.8 miles each way.  So far out of the six governors that returned cards he is the only one who used the Sharpie I sent.  After I sent the first ten cards I stopped sending Sharpies with the cards.  That will now be reserved for sending out Padres cards.  Jay did not send anything extra with the cards.  

Next week the governor of the small state with the long name sends the loot.  

Padrographs #18, #19, and #936. Keeping it all in the family Part 1

#18, Roberto Alomar.  Roberto came up through the Padres system. He made his debut with the Padres in 1988.  He was a twelve time All Star during a seventeen year major league career.  He played for the Padres for three years.  He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011.  I believe I got this signed at a Portland Beavers game against the Las Vegas Stars.
#19, Sandy Alomar, Jr. Sandy also came up through the Padres system.  I have a signed cracked bat I got from him when he played for Las Vegas in Portland.  He made his major league debut for San Diego in 1988.  He only played in eight games for the Padres in his two seasons with them.  He was a six time All Star in his twenty major league seasons.  I know I got this signed at a Beavers game against the Stars
#936, Sandy Alomar, Sr.   Sandy was a coach for the Padres from 1986-1990.  So at one time there were three Alomars with the Padres. I purchased this on eBay.

Frankenset Update 10.4.2019

This week has one custom, several cards that Jimmy of Talkin Smack sent for a card he got from the trade stack and several eBay purchases.  Kay Ivey of Alabama, signed two cards and sent one back unsigned and sent them all to the return on the SASE I enclosed.  Jimmy claimed a Mick Foley autograph from the trade stack and sent me 8 cards for the Frankenset, I was able to use 7 of them.  He sent Mike Neu, Scott Chiamprino, John Gavin, Kurt Stillwell, Jamie Quirk, Chris Donnells, Dennis Moeller and Ryan Christensen.  Thanks, Jimmy.  
The rest of this weeks update come from eBay. Now I have 3/4 of the Dodgers infield in the set, I just need Davey Lopes.  Two weeks ago I had no Ken Henderson cards and now I have two signed cards of him in the set.

Thursday customs, Tri City Dust Devil wrap up

This is the final page of the 2019 Tri City Dust Devils custom set.  I took four of the seven photos.  I really like the Ignacio Feliz card.  The other pitchers told him I was taking pictures so he looked at me and smiled.  Felix was on his way in to pitch in relief when I took his picture.  Ramon was the one who kept everyone in the bullpen relaxed.  Min-Hua is a 19 year old from Taiwan, the first amateur from Taiwan signed by the Padres.  I have also included the back of one of the cards.  

Trade Stack, Week 6

The newest addition to the trade stack is a Matt Barkley autographed rookie card.  Matt was drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 draft and is currently playing for the Bills.

Gubernatorial Return #2, Governor Kate Brown of Oregon's Disappointing Return

This is the letter that I sent to Governor Brown of Oregon.  I said that I voted for her and that I lived in Oregon.  The fact that I voted for her would indicate that I was over the age of eighteen.  I also told her that I agreed with some of her ideas.  

This is the letter that I received in response.  I don't hold the Governor directly responsible, because I don't think she ever saw the request.  I think eg (the initials under the Governors signature)  took one look at Captain America and assumed the letter was asking for resources for a report.
The following two items were included but the cards I asked her to sign were returned unsigned.  They also kept one card, which I indicated was for her to keep, my pen which I also they could keep after using it to sign the card.  Also kept was the stamped self addressed return envelope that I enclosed.
