We interrupt the unboxings to bring you this recently acquired Topps Heritage High Number Padres team set and complain about the choices made by Topps.

Tom Cosgrove made his major league debut last year appearing in 54 games for the Padres. Luis Campusano missed two months of the season due to surgery on his hand.
These three guys played in 63 games for San Diego in 2023. David Dahl played in 4 games and was granted free agency by the Padres on June 9. Odor played in 59 games and was released by the Padres on July 23. Jose Urena was never even signed by the Padres, I checked several reference sources and could not find any evidence he was even in the Padres system at all.
The lone short print in the Padres team set played in exactly ZERO games for San Diego. He was in the minor league system from July 7 to August 21.
I think I could have made better choices about whom to include in this team set than Topps did.
I am looking forward to Heritage paying tribute to Night Owl's favorite set next year.

Wow, that José Ureña card is WEIRD. You're right--I can't find any sign he has anything at all to do with the Padres. Googling "José Ureña Padres" just turns up an outfielder named Jose Urena (no diacritics, if Baseball Reference is to be believed) who was in the Padres system from 2012 to 2016 and has been playing in Mexico since then. Not even any sign that the Padres were linked to José Ureña in trade talks or anything. How the heck does that happen?
Hoping someone reads this post and has information on Urena. That is super weird.
Seeing these team sets makes me think that's how I should attack my ny giants chases next year
well, maybe topps took note that for a few days, urena was with the nationals and extrapolated that to the padres via the 1974 "washington nat'l league" variations. i am not sure if that would be clever or sad on their part if that were the case.
I've never liked Topps Heritage. This one is no surprise.
Yeah, 2 guys who didn't play for your team taking up 2 spots isn't good. Heritage is a larger set than flagship, they should have guys who aren't "good enough" for flagship.
