A very Padres-centric page.  I made the Pat Murphy after he was named manager.  I started making the cards of current Padres in the current Heritage style because it was easier to make than the computer generated graphics of the current cards.  If I was able to find good pictures of the coaches I made cards of them. I have gotten all of these particular Padres cards signed.  Recognize any of these guys?

Customs Page 13, but first this message

First a question, then a promo and then the cards.  Does anyone have a spare pack, hanger box or blaster of 2020 Bowman they would be willing to sell me?  I have checked all over the east side of Portland and haven't been able to find any. Thank you for listening to me whine.

Nachos Grande is having a really cool contest.  Kind of a June Madness contest having to do with Allen & Ginter insert sets.  Great prizes to be had and it looks like fun.  Working for the library I hope the required reading insert set wins. 

I had only heard of one of the players above and that was Mark Schaeffer.  How many have you heard of? 

Customs Page 11, a missed page and a bookstore update.

After yesterdays post a few people asked why the bookstore was closing.  The branch library that is moving into the building was even smaller than ours.  In the new age of social distancing it was too small to allow staff and library patrons to both be in the building, plus our building was the original home of that branch from 1912-1960.  I think the library realizes that the bookstore was a valuable community resource and will someday and somehow reopen it in some form.

Somehow I managed to skip a page.  Jerry Mallett was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals of the NBA in 1957.  He opted for baseball and had a four game career with the Red Sox in 1959.  How is your name recognition for this page?

Padrographs, Non Cards on Cards, BFG consolation

 It has been a productive few but sad few days for me.  On Friday morning I got the word that the bookstore I have managed for the last nineteen years would be closing.  Monday I spent calling my sixty five volunteers and letting them know there was not going to be a return to work for them once the library reopens.  Then today I had to work remotely from home because of the fear of rioting near the building where I am currently working. 

I did get a lot done in our yard this weekend.  I move six wheelbarrows of dirt twice a week from the front yard to the back.  We are deconstructing a berm in the front yard and building up a garden in the back yard.  

But over the past week I have  picked up three new Padrographs. #1201 Joey Cantillo, drafted by the Padres in the 16th round in 2017.  Has played up to Fort Wayne. The card is from 2020 Bowman and I picked it up on eBay.

#1202 Mike Phillips, came from St. Louis in a trade that saw him, Terry Kennedy, John Littlefield, Al Olmsted, Kim Seaman, Steve Swisher and John Urrea for Rollie Fingers, Gene Tenace, Bob Shirley and Bob Geren.  Mike played in fourteen games for the Padres in 1981 before being bought by the Expos in May.  Kudos to Punk Rock Paint for the uni transformation and help from Gavin at Baseball Card Breakdown. I got the signature through PastPros.

#1203, George Hinshaw, was drafted by the Padres in the eleventh round of the 1980 draft.  He played in thirteen games for the Padres in 1982 and 1983.  Someone had the signature on an index card on Ebay so I bought that and designed the card around it.  I had attempted to send him a custom 1982 card a couple of times but it never came back.

I would like to thank Kerry at Cards on Cards for sending me some Padres, a black Alan & Ginter Gwynn and some top of the class Wil Meyers.  I got consolation prizes from Johnny's Trading Spot for the BFG.  In the sadness over Friday morning news I forgot to play.

Frank Snook was the only player I had heard of on this page and that is only because he played for the Padres.  Another Wrigley Field shot for the Padres.  George Brace took a lot of pictures at Wrigley Field.  How was your name recognition on this page?

A picked pocket, mail from the king and a Frankenset update

 I was checking through the Frankenset the other day and realized I was missing a card that I thought I had.  #399 was nowhere to be found so I went on eBay and found this card of Larry Andersen.  Cool to find a card of a Padres players who is from Portland and wants to know what are packing peanuts packed in.

 The other I visited A Cracked Bat and picked a couple of Julie's pockets.  The Hot Rods sticker is now on the front of my computer and the Cammy card will probably be in my Padres Frankenset. Thank you Julie.

Kevin of The Diamond King wanted to send me some stuff after I sent him some things so he sent me eight of the 1974 Topps Washington Nat'l League cards.  I still need 7 more to complete the set.  

Frankenset update 5.26.2020

I recently added twelve more cards to the Frankenset.  Most of them came from Tom over at the Angels in Order.  He has a big list of autographs for a dollar apiece.
I have been trying to get Gary Roenicke's brother Ron to sign a custom 1984 Padres card for the last couple of years through the mail with no luck. I really like the Hensley Meulens card since he signed with his Bam Bam nickname.  I am surprised I didn't have the Randy Ready card signed.  I had him sign multiple cards when he managed the Portland Beavers for two years.  I am now down to needing just 57 cards for the Frankenset.  The want list is updated.  

Memorial Day

Today is the first Memorial Day without my Dad here.  We are going to go visit his gravesite at Willamette National Cemetery this afternoon. We will be visiting the sites of some other friends and family while we are there. I wrote most of the post below on September 13, 2005, the one year anniversary of David's death.  The numbers are current as of today.

Somehow we live with these numbers until one of them steps out and becomes something other than a number. One year ago today numbers ceased to mean anything and the cruelty of war became real. One year ago David Weisenburg left this earth,I believe to be with God,unfortunately many of us here would have preferred that he stay here with us.
David was 26 years old and I had known him since he was about 14. He was a kind hearted man who loved for his sisters wedding and got to spend extended time with his family and friends.
David was asked why he had to return to Iraq and his answer was because his troops were counting on him.
My most vibrant memory of David was during an open house for high school kids at our house. David was either a junior or senior and we were all sitting and playing cards. David was caught cheating,pretty obviously and we all laughed about it,including David. He threw back his head and laughed loudly,while laughing he hit his head on a shelf behind him,which set off another round of laughing and he hit his head again. David laughed the loudest.

A certain card company today issued a set of six "Big League Family" cards.  However they did not include my favorite baseball family so I made my own. Enjoy.

Weldon Bowlin was one of the first cards that I had to make a background for.  All I could find for him was the colorized head shot, so I added the background, not sure what park it is.  Jack Whillock featured a misspelling the first time I made it.  The Gremlin billboard in Chicago makes another appearance.  If you see a card you would like a copy of let me know and we can work something out.  

Padrograph #1200

Last Friday I received a card that became Padrograph #1200.  I broke a rule of Padrographs to include the card.   It shows the player in a minor league uniform.  It is one of only two minor league cards in Padrographs, but I decided that the player was important enough in the Padres history to break that rule.  First a little review, I didn't keep accurate records at first, I don't really know what order I received the first 869 Padrographs in.  I started keeping track with Padrograph #870, Jesse Hahn, which I received in the mail March 12, 2015.  
Tony Gwynn was arbitrarily made number 1, because he is Mr. Padre. 
 Jason Boyd was assigned number 100, he played in 23 games in 2002, as the middle of his 5 year major league career.
Pedro Martinez was assigned number 500, he played in 80 games for the Padres in 1993-1994.
Bryan Corey is Padrograph #1000, which I received around Christmas of 2016.  It is a custom I got signed through an autograph dealer I know.  Bryan pitched in 39 games for the Padres in 2008.
Juan Moreno is Padrograph #1100, he appeared in four games for the Padres in 2002.  I purchased the card from a Venezuelan card dealer on July 5, 2018.
So who is Padrograph #1200?  He is a former Padres farmhand, who was also a pitching coach for the Padres minor leagues and then was the General Manager of the Padres from 1995-2009.  Kevin Towers played in the Padres system for seven years from 1982-1989. He passed away in 2018 so I would not have been able to get a signature from him.  I decided that I would break my own rules and use this card that I found on eBay last week.

I really need to work on my scanning, I keep cutting off the top of the sheet.  I never knew LaRussa played for the Cubs before becoming the icon he is.  I love the Otis Thornton card for the photo I used.  Yes, that is Carney Lansford's brother for the Padres in 1983. There are over five hundred cards in Series One and I am around three hundred eighty in series two so I can keep this up for awhile.

Yes Ted Turner actually managed a game until they told him he couldn't.  George Hinshaw still remains unsigned I have tried him a couple of times.  German Barranca will reappear later because I found a better picture of him.
