Padrographs #14, #15 and #963

 #14 Darrell Akerfelds.   Darrell pitched in the major leagues from 1986-1991.  He was the Padres pitching coach from 2001 until his death from Pancreatic Cancer in 2012.  I sent this to him and got it signed through the mail.

#15 Sandy Alderson.  Sandy was the CEO of the Padres from 2005-2009.  I covered the Bazooka Joe name with a stamp of Marine Corps legend Chesty Puller.  Sandy was a Marine who served in Vietnam.







#963 Austin Allen.  Austin was drafted in 2015 and made his major league debut this year.  I can't remember how I obtained this, it may have been at a Salem-Keizer Volcanoes game.  

1981 Roster Mosaic

Just a note first, Thursday after I posted the first page of the Emeralds team set I received an email from one of the players pictured.  He said he still had the card and the post brought back some good memories.  Now onto 1981

I am missing two Padres from 1981, Jose Moreno and Mike Phillips.  I have a custom of Jose Moreno coming from the  Dominican Republic, a private signing that I learned.  Mike Phillips I can't even find a picture of him as a Padre and my photoshop skills are non existent, so I can't put him into a Padres uniform. 

Frankenset Update 7.19.19

#102, Gail Goodrich one of my all time favorite basketball players bumps Rymer Liriano of the Padres.
#157, Roger Craig of the 49er's bumps Danny Brewer of the Yankees.
#179, Dan Fouts, who I remember seeing live as a college QB at the U of O in the 70's.
#221, Chris Cota, Manager of the Ridgefield Raptors in the West Coast League, a college wood bat league in Oregon in Washington.  He started talking to me as I sat in a special section for Veterans at a Portland Pickles game.  I made this card and found the next card of him on eBay, he has two minor league cards and has been the coach at College of the Canyons for the last twenty years.

#370 Ron Cey, can't have too many cards of Night Owls favorite player.
#377 Charlie Joiner one of Dan Fouts targets with the Chargers.
#391 Joe Theismann.  I will never forget seeing his broken leg on TV or realize he was dating Cathy Lee Crosby.
#396 Gary Green.  1985 Olympic Baseball player and former Padre

#580 Bert Campaneris, Bert rode in my great uncles Model T Ford in the A's championship parades and George always pointed to the scratch in the fender that Bert made with the taps on his shoes. 
Bert finishes what is the last page of the Frankenset.  I am at 42% complete.

Thursday Customs, The Eugene Emeralds 2014, page 1

Back in 2014 my wife and I attended numerous Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and Hillsboro Hops games to see each team play the Eugene Emeralds.  At the time the Ems were the short season rookie league affiliate of the Padres.  We would go to the games and set in General Admission on the right field line.  In Salem that involves taking a lawn chair and sitting next to a low chain link fence next to the visiting bullpen.  I would take pictures before and during the game and make cards out of them.  I ended up getting most of the team signed.  I am working on a set for this years short season rookie league team the Tri-City Dust Devils.  We will be going to Salem at the end of this month to take pictures and make cards and hope to get them signed.  I thought I would try and find out where each of the players and coaches in this set were now.
Travis Radke  Travis missed all of 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery.  We saw him again in 2017 with Tri-City starting to work his way back.  He is currently pitching for Lake Elsinore.
Marcus Davis Marcus played through 2016 in the Padres and ChiSox organizations and is now a hitting consultant.  He went back to school and got his masters degree.
Aaron Cressley.  Aaron played through 2016 in the Padres organization and then I can't find anything else on him.
Adrian De Horta.  Adrian is currently pitching in the Angels organization.  He was released by the Padres in 2018 and signed by the Angels.  I have a Elite extra Edition card signed by him from 2015 in my Padrographs.
Bryan Verbitsky.  Bryan played through 2017 and is now the Head Coach at Long Island Baseball.
Auston Busfield  Auston played through 2018 getting up to AAA.  He voluntarily retired in January of 2019.  I have a Bowman card of him in my Padrographs. 
Colby Bluberg.  Colby is still playing ball.  He played in Puerto Rico last winter and has played for two independent teams this year.  
Jalen Goree.  Jalen played through '14 and is on facebook now.
Jose Ruiz. Jose was a catcher when he was with the Ems in 2014.  Now he is a relief pitcher with the White Sox.  He has pitched in 26 games this year.  I have a Venezuelan card of him from 2018.

Padrograph #1162

I didn't know of Dauris Valdez until the checklist for Bowman Platinum came out.  He was signed as an amateur free agent in 2016 and has pitched his way up to the AA Sod Poodles.  I got the card off eBay.

• Only need one signature to completer the team cards, Ramon Webster.  I have a signed index card of him at home to make a custom with.  I want to upgrade the multiple player cards to singles if I can.

• Jay Franklin, is a custom I made and got signed in a private signing.

Frankenset update

 #176, Mike Dupree, I just updated this card in Padrographs and I have two of them so I decided to use one in the Frankenset.
#296 Ron Cey, I just got this back in the mail.  I sent Ron four cards and he signed two and sent them all back.  I thanked him in my letter for sending the birthday card to Night Owl, but he didn't reply to that at all.  
#361, This one I bought on ebay.  I really like the '84 Donruss design and Ron Cey is a class act.  I noticed that the ones he sent back he put his number in the R but this one doesn't have that.  I wonder if he only does that on the TTM ones. This one fit a hole in the Frankenset.  
#369, I want to have cards representing every year of Topps from 1957 on in the Frankenset.  This 1966 card fits nicely.  Plus it represents a defunct franchise.

custom of the week

A few years ago for her birthday I gave my friend Kirsten Leonard a set of cards of her family.  I based each of the cards on the year the family member was born.  Each card also has a back based on that year.  I made a checklist and a cover card for the set, and I put them in a team bag.  

Album of the Week 7.10.19

Yesterday was a day off.  I take the second Tuesday of each year off to prepare and watch the All Star Game.  During the day I listened to several albums and this was the last one before the game.  Listening to this always takes me back to July 2, 1977.  I was stationed onboard the USS Kansas City (AOR-3) at Alameda, California.  Every summer Bill Graham would put on Day on the Green, concerts consisting of four acts, usually very well known.  I decided to go the show on July 2, I got tickets and rode my bike from my apartment next to Lake Merritt to the Oakland Coliseum.  Part way there one of my pedals snapped off, I had toe clips so I pedaled the rest of the way with just one pedal. 
When I got there, they had set up the stage in center field and you could sit almost anywhere.  The only places you could not sit were the infield grass, pitchers mound and the dugouts.   The A's had last played on June 30 which gave them just one full day to get everything set.  I sat on Gene Tenace's first base for the show.  
It was an impressive show, The Outlaws opened, then Santana, next was the reason I was there, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and then the headliner, Pete Frampton.  Many people left during the Frampton set, I think because he over used the effects during the concert.  
The most amazing thing to  most people is what I paid for the ticket, $11.50 ($48.60 in 2019 dollars), still a great deal.

Padrographs #890, 1160 and 1161

 #890, Mike Dupree, appeared in 12 games for the Padres in 1976.  In 1977 he appeared on a four in one card with Denny Martinez and a couple of other guys.  When I saw he was doing a private signing I made this card and sent it in.




#1160, Ty France played in 34 games this year for the Padres while Fernando Tatis, Jr. was injured.  Manny slid over to short and Ty took over at third.  I saw him play in a couple of exhibition games in Seattle before the season.  I sent this to him during Spring Training and it was returned from El Paso.



#1161 Ian Kinsler, is a good baseball mind. I tried to get his signature on a custom card at the game in Seattle, but he completely ignored the 20 or 30 who were trying to get him sign stuff.  I purchased this card off of ebay.

• I was 13
• we left La Palma, Ca to move to Pt. Sur, CA
• I attended Buena Park Junior High and Carmel Middle School
• It was only the second year of the Padres existence.

I am only missing three signatures;

1. Ramon Webster and I just picked up a index card of him to make a custom card.
2. Roberto Rodriguez, I looked at some index cards of him but not ready to shell out that kind of dough.
3. Ron Willis, I cant find any signed anything of him.  

33 of 36 is not too bad, better than some of the more recent years.

Frankenset update

#16, Larry Nelson.  I know nothing about Larry Nelson but I needed a card number sixteen to fill a spot. 
#95 Jim Otto was one of the greats of the Oakland Raiders before they decided to move here, there and everywhere.  When I saw this card I knew I needed it for the Frankenset.
#577 Greg Booker.  A Padre from 1988 Fleer is always welcome in the Frankenset.  
#585 Art Howe is the last card in the Frankenset.  The only thing that could dislodge him would be a 1988 Fleer Tony Gwynn or a ProSet Gale Sayers auto.

What I am Reading 7.2.19

The Road Warriors, Danger, Death and the Rush of Wrestling Joe "Animal" Laurinatis.  

I like reading these backstage biographies now that they don't have to maintain kayfabe all the time.  

Since last week I read Backlash by Brad Thor.  Brad Thor writes exciting fiction that I read really quickly.  I also read Reaper, Threat Zero by Nicholas Irving.  I had to report for jury duty on Friday so I had lots of time to read while we were waiting to be called.  

Padrographs #12 & #13

I don't have any new Padrographs to share with you.  I have started scanning my alphabetical binders of Padrographs.  These are the next two signed cards after Shawn Abner.  Ed Acosta played for the Pirates in 1970 and the Padres in 1971 and '72.  He had originally been signed by Houston before the 1967 season.  The Pirates traded Ed and Johnny Jeter to the Padres for Bob Miller.  He currently lives in Mission Viejo, California.  Mike Adams came to the Padres in a trade with the Indians for Brian Sikorski.  He pitched mostly in middle relief for the Padres until he was traded to the Rangers in 2011 for Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland.  I got the Acosta on eBay and the Adams through the mail c/o the team.  They were arbitrarily assigned the numbers 12 & 13 in the Padrograph index.
