Trade Stack, 11.27.19

On May 30, 2016 Ninety Two year old WWII Navy Veteran Burke Waldron jogged out to the mound in Seattle and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  When I found this card and saw that Mr. Waldron signed cards I sent him some.  I wrote about being the son of a Navy veteran and a Navy vet my self.  He signed the three cards I sent him and an extra card that he had printed.  I sent him five dollars and he wrote back thanking me for the "fiver".

Gubernatorial Return #10, Ohio

Ohio Governor Mike Dewine must have been appearing in Cincinnati when this photo was taken as he is wearing a Reds jacket.  It only took him nine days to sign and return the card.  

Padrographs #27, #28, #1124 and #1185

Two customs and two Topps cards this week.  
#1124, Dwain Anderson played in fifty three games for the Padres in 1973, splitting the season between the Cardinals and San Diego.  I found this card front online, made a back and sent it with a $10 donation to Mr. Anderson and got it back in fifty eight days.  
#27, Matt Antonelli played in twenty one games for the Padres in 2008.  I had followed his progress through the Padres system for a couple of years.  I think I got him to sign this when he played in Portland.  
#28, Jose Arcia played in two hundred thirty four games for the Padres in 1969 & 1970.  I think I got this signed through the mail.
#1185, Matt Howard* played for the Yankees in 1996.  He was a replacement player for the Padres during the strike.  I can't find any stats for his time with the Padres.  The front was done by Jeremy of Topps cards that never were.  He is the third replacement player I have gotten a signature of.  

*Matt added John 3:3 to his signature in the New International Version it reads, "Jesus replied, very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."

• The Padres went 79-83 under former Yankee Jerry Coleman, who came out of the Padres broadcast booth to manage.
• Have autographs of all 36 players the Padres used that year.

Frankenset Update 11.22.19

Just one card to update in the Frankenset this week.  I pulled out an 1986 Topps Franklin Stubbs for Lee over at Dodger Cardboard  and picked up this 1980 Frank Tanana.  I remember reading articles about Frank in many Christian magazines in the '80's.  I am currently still needing 149 cards to complete the set.

My Musicards #6

Glenn Campbell may not be familiar to the younger readers (if there are any)  of the blog.  He was very popular in the late sixties and seventies.  He had many hits and hosted The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on TV.  He co-starred with John Wayne in True Grit.  Dolly Parton and Sylvester Stallone made a terrible movie based on his hit Rhinestone Cowboy.  He was the voice of Chanticleer in the animated movie Rock-A-Doodle. He was a member of the Wrecking Crew which backed up musicians or replaced bands on records. He went on tour with The Beach Boys replacing Brian Wilson for awhile.  He passed away from complications of Alzheimers in 2017.  I have two or three of his lp's in my collection.

Trade stack week 13, 11.20.19

The third time is a charm it seems.  Washington, D.C. has its third major league baseball franchise and won the World Series since 1934.  The first Washington franchise moved to Minnesota and became the Twins.  The second franchise moved to Texas and became the Rangers.  Can you imagine the stories the media would come up with if the Rangers and the Nationals faced each other in the World Series.  
One of the members of that second franchise was Jim Duckworth, who pitched for the Senators from 1963 to 1966.  He split 1966 between the Senators and the Athletics of Kansas City.  After finishing his baseball career in 1967 he was a member of the California Highway Patrol for twenty five years and then taught high school and middle school.  Then he worked in a kayak shop for a couple of years.

Gubernatorial Return #9

 Governor Doug Ducey returned my card in just 11 days, however he signed it on the back.  I haven't decided it I am going to resend the cards that are signed on the back and ask them to sign again on the front.  There are about five I think that have signed on the back.  
An interesting thing happens on Facebook when I post these in a through the mail autograph group.  I get complimented on the cards, but almost unanimously people don't like the governors. 
In another development, in this series one of the governors lost a reelection bid.  Matt Bevins of Kentucky lost and I am debating about whether or not to continue the series with new governors as they are elected.  

Padrographs #25, #26 and #968

#25, Alexi Amarista had a seven year major league career.  Five of those years were playing with the Padres.  He started in the major leagues with the Angels and finished with the Rockies.  He was nicknamed the Little Ninja while with the Padres.  This is one of my favorite cards of him.  It shows the playful side of the team after a game.
#986, Chip Ambres in three years in the majors only played in eighty games.  He played in twenty four games for the Padres in 2007.  I tried sending to him multiple times and finally found this one on ebay.
#26, Larry Andersen once wondered "Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?"  Larry is a native of Portland, Oregon who pitched in seventy games for the Padres in 1991 and 1992.

My Musicards, #5

 In 1981 I worked at the Firs Bible and Missionary Conference Center in Bellingham, Washington. Bellingham is just twenty miles from the Canadian border.  I worked with one of my sisters and my brother as camp counselors for a summer of day camps.  After the summer I stayed on as a member of the cooking staff.  Many of the other counselors and staff were from Burnaby, Surrey and other Vancouver suburbs and I was introduced to several Canadian bands.  The one that I have been listening to ever since is Doug and The Slugs.  I have had their music in various formats and am looking forward to purchasing it in vinyl again.

Gubernatorial Return #8

Tom Wolf has been governor of Pennsylvania since 2015.  He was reelected in 2018.  He is from Mount Wolf which is named after an ancestor who was the postmaster.  It only took eight days for him to return the card to me.

Padrographs #23, #24 and #876

#23, Gabe Alvarez was drafted by the Padres in the 1995 Draft.  He made his major league debut in 1998 for the Tigers. He played in eleven games for the Padres in 2000. He is currently the assistant baseball coach at USC.
#876, R.J. Alvarez played for the Padres in 2014.  He played last year in the Marlins system.  
#24, Joe Amalfitano coached for the Padres in 1976-1977.

• No longer working on missile control systems, they found out I could type and made me the clerk typist for the Weapons Division.
• Typed forms in quinteplicate for eight hundred tons of ammunition we took off the USS Enterprise.
• Took my first flight in a CH-46 helicopter
• Padres went 84-78 under Roger Craig
• Tony Gwynn turned eighteen
• Tim Flannery was drafted in the sixth round of the draft
• Only missing Brian Greer again this year, have thirty seven of thirty eight players autographed.

Frankenset Set update 11.8.19

Christmas is coming and I have most of my shopping done.  I am taking part in the secret Santa that is being conducted by Jon over at a Penny Sleeve for Your Thoughts. Head on over if you want to join in the fun.

I have changed some of the things I collect.  I think I have found all the Bip Roberts cards I am ever going to find.  I have so much Eisenhower stuff I don't know what to do with it all.  

I added three Padres minor leaguers to my list to collect.  I have met Travis Radke and Jonny Homza at Low A games.  Nick I read a great article about him in The Athletic, he made his major league debut this year. 

Just two cards to add to the Frankenset this week.  Local boy Greg Brock replaces Reggie Roby because I sent him off to someone who collects him.  Tim Kerr is a cool looking hockey card that filled a need.

My Music Stars #4

I saw Boston in Oakland at the Arena in 1977.  A band called Nantucket opened for them. I assumed it was another band from Massachusetts, but in doing research for this post it turns out they are from North Carolina.  The only thing I remember about them or their set was the lead singer jumping off the stage and playing harmonica while running around the concert floor.  Boston was probably at the height of their popularity.  They had to assemble a band after getting signed to Epic on the strength of a demo. The demos were Brad Delp singing over tracks that Tom Scholz had dubbed over the last six years while studying at MIT.  There are two memories of the show, beside the great music.  I remember a pipe organ seeming to rise out of the stage and Brad Delp almost getting pulled off the stage.  He laid down to shake hands across the barrier in front of the stage and someone pulled on him.  I don't think he did that again.
My son and two of his friends went and saw Boston sometime in the 90's.

Gubernatorial return #7

Governor Mike Parson of Missouri added an inscription on his card, "Gov 57".  As indicated at the bottom of the card he is the fifty seventh governor of Missouri.  He was the Lieutenant Governor until his predecessor resigned to avoid felony charges.  They will be running against each other next year it sounds like.

Padrograph #1182, #1183 and #1184

#1182, Greg Page played three season in the minors for Pocatello and Salinas from 1988-1990.  He was one of the Padres replacement players, Jeremy of Topps Cards that never were made the fronts and then I made backs and sent them out.  I have gotten two back.  Greg also included some signed minor league cards.
#1183, Mike Hargrove, the Human Rain Delay played in fifty two games for the Padres in 1980.  I made an overlay for a Panini certified auto card for this card.  One of the most unusual autographs I have is one of Mike on the back of a Captain America action figure.  Friends used to take it with them on vacation and take pictures of it on the vacation.  One friend took it to spring training and was going to take a picture of Mike with it and he took it and signed it.  It was when he was managing the Mariners.  
#1184, Ramon Webster, played in 105 games for the Padres in 1970 and 1971.  I made the card and then bought an index card and combined the two.

Frankenset Update 11.1.19

The first and last card in the mosaic were purchased on ebay.  The two Governor cards are part of my governor project, I now have twenty cards of the fifty governors signed.  The other thirty one cards are from John of Johnny's Trading spot.  This was my surprise after he claimed some cards from my Wednesday trade stack post.  He also included a couple of small sets of cards and a 1967 Baseball Digest.  

The frankenset page and the frankenset want list are both updated.  Only 181 cards to go.
