Album 7.3.19

Yesterday in the mail I received three Village People albums.  In January of 1979 they released In The Navy.  I was still in the navy and we loved the song because it was so wrong and so campy.  Rumor had it the Navy commissioned the song as a recruiting tool but when they realized that the group's fan didn't quite fit with the group they actually wanted to recruit they changed their mind.  This was after they had let the group shoot the video on board the U.S.S. Reasoner.  The song still brings a smile to my face and I have been out of the Navy for forty years.

2009 Roster Mosaic

2009, I turned 52. The Padres went 75-87, the Yankees won the series 4-2 over the Phillies.  We celebrated our 24 wedding anniversary.

I am still missing a bunch of guys for 2009. I have 49 out of 55 and most of them I can't find any information on.  I guess this will have to be it.

#39 Casey Meisner drafted by the Mets, now with the Giants after having gone through a  couple of other organizations.  Never higher than AA
#49 Patrick Leonard, playing at AA Biloxi in the Brewers organization after spending several years in the Tampa system and one year in the White Sox.
#54 Tyler Danish pitched for the White Sox for three years and is now playing independent ball.
#65 Christian Binford, after bouncing around in the minors for years he is now playing for the Kansas City T Bones
#71 Daniel Gossett pitched for Oakland in 2017 & 2018 and doesn't appear anywhere this year.

#80 Ricardo Bautista doesn't appear to be playing since playing in Winter League in 2017-2018
#81 Gabriel Encinas was seen pitching for Tijuna in 2017
#87 Jordan Barnes played three years (2013-15) in the Gulf Coast League
#88 Tyler Kinley is currently pitching for the Marlins
#97 Patrick Kivlehan has played for the Padres, Reds and D'backs and is currently in the Jays system.

#110 Bruce Irvin is currently signed to a one year contract with the Panthers for 2019.

#117 Edwin Escobar pitched for the Red Sox and D'backs and has been pitching in Japan since 2017
#118 Onelki Garcia pitched for the Dodgers in 2013 and the Royals in 2017 and gone.

#128 Brock Huard played in the NFL from 1999-2004 with the Seahawks and Colts.  Now he host the Seattle pregame shows.
#131 Amara Darboh has been with the Seahawks for several years
#132 Shane Zeile is the nephew of Todd Zeile.  He hasn't played anywhere since 2017.

#144 C.J. Edwards is currently pitching for the Cubs as Carl Edwards, Jr. 

#158 Tyrone Taylor has been in the Brewers system since 2012, he progressed as  high as AAA but is currently playing Rookie League ball

#165 Carlos Tocci is currently playing for the Rangers

#167 Larry Colton is the only major league pitcher ever nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.  He was nominated for his book, Counting Coup, a year in the life of a women's high school basketball team on a reservation.  Larry founded a Portland book festival called Wordstock, he and I have become friends.  He will sign things for me, when I see him.  He is a first rate author.

#168 Frank Peters, played in the minor leagues, managed the Portland Mavericks and had a restaurant in Portland for years.  I have met him a couple of times.

#173 Nestor Molina is currently pitching in Mexico

Work group customs

 A few years ago for some event I made cards for the work group I'm part of at the library.  June has since left the group.  I used the Topps card design from the year each person was born.  I would like to make one for our current boss, but I need someone to make a custom 1972 Topps template for me.  It is beyond me.  

Album Stockpile

Last Friday and Saturday Ruthann and I went to Eugene to celebrate one of her brothers 60th Birthday.  We had a good time with him and two more of her brothers, she has four.  On Saturday we went out to breakfast with some family and then afterwards three of us went thrift store shopping.  We went to Teen Challenge, Goodwill and St Vinnies.  I scored two hats, one from my high school and one from Diego Garcia, which is a place I had visited during my time in the US Navy.  I also got 4 CDs so we would have something to listen to on the ride home.  The big score were the thirty six albums that I got.  The two best albums were Edgar Winter Group, They Only Come out at Night and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John.  I also got a couple of Keith Green albums, Walter Murphy, Meco and an early Bonnie Raitt. I should be listening to this batch for a while.  

What I Am Reading

Dear Marcus, A Letter to the Man Who Shot Me by Jerry McGill

At age thirteen, as he was walking home from a friend's house, Jerome McGill was shot in the back and became a quadriplegic. The shooter was never apprehended so therefore the identity of his shooter remains a mystery.  Thirty years later, he decided to writer a letter to the person who shot him.  He arbitrarily picked the name Marcus and shares his feelings and the results of the shooting, physically, mentally, emotionally and relational. McGill now goes by Jerry, because things that Jerome wanted will never be.  He has recovered some use of his arms, he has gotten a bachelors in literature from Fordham University and a masters in education from Pacific University.  He currently lives in Portland.  It is a very good book that gives insight into the life and mind of one person.  

Padrographs #11 and #866

I didn't actually start keeping track of what number order I got my Padrographs until somewhere fairly high up, so I had to go back and retroactively number the cards I already had.  The sub title of this blog is and always has been "From Abner to Zimmer".  I named it that because Shawn Abner came first alphabetically and Zim was last.  Amazingly in 11 years that hasn't changed although there has been much added in between.  Shawn Abner was drafted by the Mets in 1984 and came to the Padres in a big trade in 1986. He made his major league debut in 1986 and played with the Padres until part way through the 1991 season to the Angels.  He played in 1992 with the White Sox.  His son, Seth "Scrump" Abner is a professional Call of Duty player.  
Don Zimmer was with the Padres at the beginning of their major league existence, managing their A league team in 1969 and the AAA Salt Lake City Bees in 1970. He was the Padres third base coach for 11 games in 1972 and then was asked to replace Preston Gomez, who managed the Padres for their first three and a half seasons.  Zim managed through 1973 finishing last both seasons.  When Ray Kroc bought the team before the 1974 season he let Zim and most of the coaches go.  He then went on to coach and manage several other teams.  He passed away in 2014.
I have the signatures of all the other coaches on the 1973 card on other cards.  Shawn Abner is #11 and Zim is #866.  

1999 Roster Mosaic

Looks like I have 39 of 41 players on the roster in 1999.  There are two Hall of Famers on the roster this year.  One custom card in this bunch, Matt Whiteside.  Roberto Rivera has not had a successful TTM signing since 2001.  Carlos Garcia has had some this year so I guess I need to make a custom of him and send it out.  I sent the Garcia card out on Thursday.  

No frankenset  update yesterday cause I didn't have any new cards for it.  Yesterday afternoon I received 80 2013 Bowman autographed cards, I can only use 29 of them.  What am I going to do with all of these extras?  Suggest something, please.  All ideas will be considered.

Custom

Last Tuesday evening I went to a Portland Pickles game to pick up a set of baseball cards.  The Pickles are part of a college wood bat league that plays in the Pacific Northwest.  I got free tickets to the game for being a veteran and we got to sit in a special section.  That section is right next to the visiting teams dugout.  The Pickles were playing the Ridgefield Raptors who were being managed by Chris Cota.  Before the game he came over and talked to me and throughout the game we talked and I asked him for a game ball and he got me one.  When I got home I did some research and found out that he had been drafted by the White Sox in the third round of the 1986 draft.  He was drafted from the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California, where he is currently the head baseball coach.  He played two seasons in the minor leagues.  I have picked up those two cards and will send them to him to sign along with this custom.  

What I am Listening to

Blues On The Bayou by B.B. King

Someone at work gave me this.  I love it.  I am enthralled by the interplay between BB's guitar and the other instruments.  And then when BB starts to growl lyrics I am transported to another time and place.  

Yesterday evening my wife and I went to Lloyd Center to kill some time before going to see Field of Dreams on the big screen.  We went into Suncoast Video and they have records from $1.99 and up, Buy 2 get a third for a dollar.  I picked up Julian Lennon, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, The Monkees, Lynyrd Skynyrd and U2.  Looking forward to listening to all of them.

What I Am Reading

Deception Cove by Owen Laukkanen

I just started this on Friday, but am totally engrossed.  So far an ex-con, a rescue dog, a female Marine with PTSD and a corrupt deputy have come into play.  The author paints a great picture of each of his characters and what they are going through physically, emotionally and mentally.

Padrographs #1156-#1158

 #1156, Steve Simpson, Steve appeared in 9 games for the Padres in 1972.  He had been drafted by the Padres in 1970.  Those nine games were the extent of his major league career.  He passed away in 1989 at just 41.  I found a signature of him on eBay and made this custom card of him.  #1157, Dick Kelly, Dick appeared in 75 games for the Padres in 1969 and 1971.  He started his major league career in 1964 with the Milwaukee Braves and stayed with them when they moved to Atlanta.  He was the 28th pick in the expansion draft by the Padres.  He passed away in 1991 so I picked up a signed index card and sandwiched it between two 1972 Topps cards.  #1158, Xavier Edwards, Xavier was drafted by the Padres in the first round in 2018 and is currently playing at A Fort Wayne.  This card definitely needs an update.  His signature is too big for that small space.

Football Customs cards

For about the past ten years or so on Sundays during the fall and winter you can find my best friend, Greg Rowlett, and I on couches either at his place or our place (although for the past two years he and his wife come over here as they are remodeling).  We will be watching the Seahawks and Greg will be complaining about how they are going to lose and I am enjoying the game with another fan.  
I just made this card a week or so ago and sent it off to Coach Carroll and am hoping to get it back soon.  I really like the 1970 baseball design, it is good for almost any sport or person.  

Warren Zevon-Excitable Boy

My wife went on a trip to see some of her family in Eugene, one of my cousins in Roseburg and her aunt in Coos Bay before coming home.  While she was in Eugene she and one of her brothers went thrift store shopping and she picked up some albums for me.  They were 99¢ each.  To me this was the cream of the crop.  It has Werewolves of London, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner and Send Lawyers, Guns and Money along with the title track.  It is one of my all time favorite albums.  

What I Am Reading

 Spearhead, An American Tank Gunner, His Enemy and a Collison of Lives in WWII by Adam Makos.  
The true story of a tank gunner from World War II who fought at the Battle of the Bulge.  Adam Makos and his team interviewed numerous people on both sides it is a compelling read and intensely intimate.  

You can read reviews of what I read on my other blog, readermanpdx.blogspot.com.  From June 2005 to May of this year I reviewed books and journaled over at readerman.us.  It got too expensive since I wasn't making any money from it, so now I have switched to blogspot.   

Padrographs #1153, #1154 and #1155

 I got this duo back on the same day.  I sent them out on the same day also care of the El Paso Chihuahuas.  They were out for 15 days.  

                                             #1153 Chris Stewart.  This is one of two customs that I sent Chris.  The other one will show up in the Frankenset eventually.  This is from his first time with the Padres in 2009.  I got the day back just two days after he opted out of his minor league deal with the Padres.

#1154, Boog Powell.  Hershel Mack Powell has the same name as his Great Grandfather,Granddad and his Dad, so they called him Boog to differentiate him.   He was originally drafted by the A's back in 2012.  He has played in the majors with the Mariners and A's.  He is currently playing at AAA El Paso.  

#1155 Don Orsillo.  I get to watch the Padres on at bat and so I have heard a lot of Don Orsillo and Mark Grant and enjoy listening to them.  If you want to see the Mark Grant companion to this card, check out yesterdays post.

#Throwback Thursday but on a Sunday

Remember those Fleer Cards that were two cards put when you put them next to each other they made one picture.  Well recently I found a picture of Padres broadcasters Don Orsillo and Mark Grant and made a couple of cards of them.  I got them back last week.  Orsillo signed his and sent them back.  It took an extra day to get Mark Grants back.  I sent it to his home but evidently he took it to work with him and had Don Orsillo sign the combined card.  

 On the left is the card Don Orsillo signed and sent back.  On the right is the one Mud signed back and below is the one that came back with a nice note from Mark Grant thanking me for the cards.

1979 Roster Mosaic

I have 94% of the 1979 Roster signed.  I am missing Brian Greer and Mike Hargrove.  I can't find anything signed by Greer or an address for him.  I have a signed card of Hargrove coming, it is a Panini product so it doesn't a logo on it.  I think I can do something with to make it a Padrograph.  If you know Brian Greer please let me know.

I bought a lot of Lakers autographs and found an old Yankee and discovered I had two signatures in one pocket  in my Padrographs binder.

#542 Chris Young, I was moving some cards around and found I had two Chris Young cards in the same pocket.  This one was one I got signed through the mail and the other one was a gift from another collector.

Customs

From 1990-1995 I worked at Baseball Cards and More full time.  For a couple of years  before that I had worked for Randy part time especially around the holidays.   In 1996 I decided to move to the other card shop on the East Side of Portland, Portland Sports Cards. After two years there I went back to college and had to change jobs because the I couldn't work my schedule at the shop around my classes.  We bought a house a couple of miles  away from Baseball Cards and More in 2007, so I started going in and seeing Randy.  It was always fun to go and try and find things in the exceptionally cluttered store.  Randy seemed to know where everything was though.  He was always willing to try and find something, he wasn't a computer user much, so I would tell him about products I had heard about and he would try and get them.  He predicted back in the late 90's that Topps was going to try and market and sell directly to consumers.  He was right.  
On December 30 some one went into the shop and Randy was sitting in his chair where he sometimes fell asleep and he had passed away.  I made these and gave most of them to Randy's family and then we had a second run that we sold at card shows in Portland to raise money for Randy's family.

Album of the Week

 I have always liked the music from the movie Fiddler on the Roof, so I picked up this Broadway Cast Recording thinking it would be similar.  Well I was wrong and will be passing this on and trying to find the movie soundtrack which I hope is better than this.  I really like Topol and the rest of the movie cast.

What I am Reading

I have read a couple of other books by Michael Koryta and really enjoyed them.  Tara Beckley is escorting a visiting lecturer when a van slams into them.  Leaving the lecturer dead and Tara locked in (conscious but unable to communicate or move).  As she is fighting that battle there are others moving in on her.  For reasons both good and bad.  It is an exciting read.  I lost track of time last night when I was reading it.  Looking forward to the climax.

Padrographs #1151 and #1152

 #1151, Roberto Pena.  Roberto was drafted from the Phillies in the 1968 expansion draft.  He was traded to the A's for Ramon Webster in 1970.  He is one of the last two players I need from the 1969 roster.  I got this from eBay.  

#1152, Colin Young.  Colin Young is the left handed batting practice pitcher for the Padres starting just before the season started.  He previously played in the Rockies system from 1999-2007.  I had read an article about him and two friends in the Athletic.  We went to Seattle the end of March to see a couple of exhibition games against the Padres.  Seems Colin was having his tryout for the job at those two games.  Then there was another article about him in the Athletic.  I made this card and sent it to him c/o of the Padres and got it back in a couple of weeks, I sent it when they were on the road. 

Contest Results

I had a contest the other day in which I busted 14 blasters and sorted cards.  The object was to guess the number of autographs, relics and serial numbered cards and be closest without going over, (what can I say I channeling Bob Barker).
There where a total of 18 cards which met the criteria.  There were 12 entrants and the winner is DHoff of Coot Veale and the Vealtones.    DHoff will get the first pick and pick three items.  Then the other eleven people will be randomized and the first person on that list can pick two items.  Then you can each pick in turn and the last person can have the last two items, if I mathed correctly.  Here is the order of picking after DHoff.  The items are on the Contest Winning page of Padrographs, each item will be marked gone and the name of the person who picked it will be in the caption also.  I will Update the Blog each time something is picked and try and notify the next person they are up.  You can email me your address at padrographsatlivedotcom.
