Frankenset Update, August 23, 2019

Not a lot of words today, the Mrs. and I are leaving this morning on a trip to the South of Oregon for the weekend.  I would like to thank Tom of Angels in Order, who provided 11 of this weeks cards.  The Reba McEntire card is a custom I made and sent to her.  It came back pretty quickly.  The two Mavericks are members of the Battered Bastards of Baseball that I met at a Hillsboro Hops game.

Thursday customs, Tri City Dust Devils, Page 1

I thought I would do another custom minor league set this year.  My wife and I went down to Salem to see the Volcanoes play the Tri City Dust Devils.  I took my camera and took pictures, although the camera quit working part way through the first game.  So I either found pictures on the net or used headshots from the team's site.  As I usually do I made two copies of each card and one for each player to keep.  I made backs based on the 1970 back also.  Baseball reference now includes some college stats so I included those.  There is an example of the backs up top.
Jason Blanchard is a headshot from the team website. Jason Reynolds signed for me before a start against the Hillsboro Hops.  I gave him an autographed Neil DeGrasse Tyson card I had.  This is a picture I took in Salem when he was warming up before a game. Connor Lehmann started the first game we went to.  He was disappointed when I didn't have a card for him to keep.  I had forgotten several cards at home and had to bring them the next night.  Connor was pleased when I showed up with a copy of the card for him. Ethan Elliott, Deacon Medders and Matthew Acosta are all photos I took.  I almost used another photo I had of Deacon, it was in the upper 50's at the game and I was comfortable in my Hawaiian shirt, but Deacon had a scarf on, a hoody with the hood up and pulled tight cause he was cold.  He is from Alabama and he said he was cold.  Jack Stronach and Logan Driscoll were pictures I found on the web.  That is the only picture I could find of Jack.  Jonny Homza went to South Anchorage High School in Anchorage, Alaska.  We have a friend who teaches there, so we asked her if she knew him.  She never had him in class but remembered him.  We texted with her during the game and told Jonny and he remembered her also.  It was fun because he really brightened when we talked of his hometown.  
It will be interesting to see how far any of these guys get.  I think have four pages of cards.  I got 29 of 34 cards signed.  I took sixteen of the photos in the set. 

Trade Stack, Week 2

No one claimed the trade stack with just the 1988 Fleer Tim Flannery card.  This weeks addition is a 2016 DJ LeMahieu Stadium Club Autograph that I pulled out of a pack.  

If you would like the cards claim them and then tell me you will send something.  A book, an autograph, an album anything.  Don't tell me what it is, I want to be surprised.  I will mail the cards when you claim them.  

Padrographs #1165 & #1166

 #1165,  Manny Machado.  The $300 million man.  Manny signed a free agent contract with the Padres and I hope it pays off next year with a World Championship for the Padres.  I got this for more than I pay for most cards, from eBay.







#1166, Candy Sierra.  The Padres signed Candy as an amateur free agent before the 1983 season.  He made his debut for the Padres in 1988 before being traded to the Reds.  He pitched in his final game in 1988 also.  I sent this to him at home in San Diego and it came back in nine days.  It is a custom I made with a little help from Gavin at Baseball Card Breakdown.

Thursday Customs, 2014 Emeralds, Page 5, The End

Here are the final cards in the 2014 Eugene Emeralds set.  Also a look at the backs of these cards.  There is not a lot to say about players who are just getting started in the game.  All of these photos are ones I got off the internet. 
Chris Huffman, up to AAA last season but is missing this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Zech Lemond, pitched in the Padres organization through 2017.  Spent 2018 in the Marlins organization.  Currently pitching for the Texas Airhogs.  I remember getting this card signed at a Hops game in 2014.
Danny Wissman, pitched in one game for the Ems in 2014 and didn't ever pitch again.  
Felipe Blanco, played through 2017 in the Padres organization.  In 2017 he was a player coach at Tri-City and this year he is the fielding coach at Lake Elsinore.
Joey Epperson, played one season on professional ball and is now an accountant at ADP here in Portland.
Edwin Moreno, the second player by that name in the Padres organization, he played through 2017.
Homer Bush, Homer was a player in the Padres organization before being traded to the Yankees.  He played in the majors for seven years.  A hip injury caused his retirement.  He coaches still and has written a book titled, "Hitting Low in the Zone, A New Baseball Paradigm" 

Stealing Trade Stack and Trade Me Anything

I am stealing an idea from Nachos Grande and another from Thorzul and combining them.
Each Wednesday I will add an autographed card to the stack.  If you want the stack claim it and send me something.  A card, a book, an album, a gift card, a used, well you get the idea.  So here is the first card in the stack.  

a new card shop experience

Yesterday we went to Vancouver, Washington for my son and daughter anniversary party that was combined with a 2nd birthday for their daughter.  
Since there is a paucity of card shops on the east side of Portland I decided to stop at a card shop near my son's house.  I had been looking for some Heritage at every Fred Meyer and Target in town and had been unable to find any.  
I got to the store and looked at their pile of junk wax and picked up a box of Corvette cards for a friend and a box of Yo MTV Raps to see if I can make a set.  
I went to the counter and asked for some packs of Heritage high numbers.  The person behind the counter went over and got some packs out of the box.  I asked if I could pick my own packs and was told no.  He said they had too many pack searchers, so I told him he could watch me take the packs.  He said no card stores in Vancouver allow anyone to pick their own packs.  I bought my Corvette, MTV and Heritage cards and left.  I may go back to get some cool boxes or singles but I will not be buying any packs from them.  If they don't trust me I don't trust them.

Frankenset Update, August 16, 2019

#80, Roy Winston replaces Aaron Coonrod, basically because I like 1969 Topps Football.
#118, Walt Suggs replaces Oneilki Garcia for the same reason.
#232, Johnny Gilbert is a custom card I made and sent to him. It only two weeks to get back.  The same day I sent this I also sent customs to Alex Trebek, Mark Harmon and Reba McEntire. 
#322, Conrad Dobler replace Marvell Wynne because when you have the chance to include a player who was once considered the meanest player in football in your set, why not.
#468 Guy Morris, I needed something to fill a numbered spot.
#469 Charlie Hough, one of the oldest players to play.  He was 40 when this card came out in 1988 and would play another 6 years.
#470 Dave Dravecky, I can never have too many cards of the man by younger son is named for.
#471 Fred Dryer.  I remember Fred more for his acting, as the lead on Hunter and for a memorable turn as a Vietnam Vet on NCIS.
#472 Ken Rudolph, another number filler
#472 Ken McMullen, can't have too many cards from Night Owls favorite team in his favorite set.

Thursday Customs, 2014 Eugene Emeralds, Page 4

Seth Lucio, pitched through 2016 in the Padres organization, since 2017 he has been pitching for the Lake Erie Crushers in the Frontier League/
Tom Dorminy, pitched for the organization through 2017 and played last year and this in an independent league.  
Tony Rizzoti last pitched at A ball for the White Sox in 2016.
Trae Santos has played independent ball the last two seasons.
Walker Weickel is currently pitching for the AA Frisco Rough Riders in the Rangers organization.
Wilson Santos last pitched in 2017 for the Giants organization.
Yale Rosen played one more season in the Padres organization and now lives in Pullman, WA and works at Three Men and A Mower.
Franchy Cordero made it to the majors in 2017.  He is currently on the 60 day DL with a elbow injury.
Cory Bostjancic was last seen pitching in an independent league in 2015.

Padrographs #963, #978 and #993

 Nothing new this week so here are some older Padrographs.  I am scanning my way through the alphabet.  
#963 Austin Allen, made his major league debut earlier this year and played in 21 games for the Padres and is currently at El Paso.  He was drafted by the Padres in the 5th round in 2015.
#978 Logan Allen, came to the Padres in 2015 as part of the trade that sent Craig Kimbrel to the Red Sox.  Went to the Indians earlier this year as part of the trade that brought Taylor Tramell to the Padres organization.  Made his major league debut for the Padres in 8 games for the Padres this year before the trade.  
#993 Dusty Allen, was drafted by the Padres in the 30th round in 1995.  Made his major league debut in 2000 before being traded to the Tigers, that same year, for Gabe Alvarez.  For some reason in 2000 all the Padres had mug shots taken, usually there were other shots also in front of the background, but this was the only Padres photo I could find of Dusty.

Frankenset Update

#55 Bennie Blades, had a 10 year NFL career finishing with 1997 with the Seahawks
#93 Todd Krygier, a nine year NHL veteran
#103 Pluto, is an 89 year old dog who made his film debut in 1930
#104 Donald Duck, the most published comic book character (outside of the superhero genre) made his film debut in 1934.
#111 Mickey Mouse, made his film debut.  The Disney cards are ones my sons and I sent out to Disneyland in the early 90's.  I was impressed that each signature looked different.
#116 Scott Garrelts, 1987 Donruss.  This is one of 12 cards that SanJoseFuji gave me when he visited me at work on July 29.
#124 Goofy, another card from my sons' youth.
#128 Emerson Boozer, I had previously read the card number wrong but the Booze is in the correct place now.
#133 Terry Kirby, another card from Fuji
#139 Jose Theodore, Fuji
#186 Adam Deadmarsh, Fuji brought this card also, but I had heard of Adam because he played 4 seasons for the Portland Winterhawks.
#227 Ray Burris, of the former Montreal Franchise.  I have always liked the 1982 Topps design.
#313 Mark Davis, former San Diego Padre and Cy Young Award Winner.
#375 Bruce Benedict, thanks to Fuji for another card.
#404 Mike Hampton with a cameo by former Padre and Hall of Famer Mike Piazza
#437 Andy Benes, draft pick card from before they were as common as a cold.
#450 Mike Aldrete, I wish I could find a picture of him in a Padres uni, he is someone I want for my roster mosaic.
#565 Benny Agbayani, the last card for this week and another gift from Fuji.

Thursday Customs, 2014 Eugene Emeralds, Page 3

Michael Kelly, was drafted by the Padres in the first round in 2011.  He got as far as AAA El Paso in 2017, in 2018 he pitched at AAA for the O's.  This year he is pitching for the Blue Crabs in the Atlantic League.  
Mitch Mattoon one of two people responsible for getting the set so completely signed.  He is currently the trainer at a Lutheran High School in Fullerton, California.
Nelson Cruz, was very kind to our grandaughter during this trip.  We have an autographed picture of him waving to Nola.  She was almost three when she went to her first baseball game.  I don't know where he is now.
Nick Torres, Nick's wife Kerrin was the other person responsible for getting the set so completely signed, she helped me identify players out of uniform.   Nick played up to AAA and was released by the Padres, played at Round Rock for the Rangers, was released by them.  Last year he split between Round Rock and the KC T Bones.  This year he is playing in Mexico.  
River Stevens, drafted by the Padres in 2012 was still playing in the Padres organization last year. 
Robbie Wine seemingly only managed this one year.  He is currently the owner of a baseball academy in Amarillo, Texas.
Rod Boykin, retired from Baseball in October of 2018.
Ryan Butler, had been promoted to Fort Wayne and only played one year of minor league ball.  
Sam Holland, is from Australia and has been playing there the last couple of years.   

Padrograph #1164

Last week was a different week.  I went down the freeway about an hour to see the Volcanoes play the Dust Devils.  I made 33 cards, some with pictures I took on Monday and some with pictures from the net.  I got 26 signed, one guy had gotten promoted and I will try in Hillsboro to get the other 6 signed.  The cards will be showing up on here once I get down with my Emeralds custom set.  

I sent this custom card to Dwain Anderson along with $10 bucks and in 58 days it came back.  Dwain had put it in a penny sleeve in a top loader and wrapped that in paper prior to sending it back.  He played in 53 games for the Padres in 1973, he split the seaso between St. Louis and San Diego.
